General fitness training works towards broad goals of overall health and well-being, rather than narrow goals of sport competition, larger muscles or concerns over appearance. A regular moderate workout regimen and healthy diet can improve general appearance markers of good health such as muscle tone, healthy skin, hair and nails, while preventing age or lifestyle-related reductions in health and the series of heart and organ failures that accompany inactivity and poor diet.
Diet itself helps to increase calorie burning by boosting metabolism, a process further enhanced while gaining more lean muscle. An aerobic exercise program can burn fat and increase the metabolic rate.
General fitness training may be used to promote weight loss. Personal trainers work with a client's physician and/or therapist to construct a program centred around restructuring lifestyle while helping to provide the necessary motivation for its success.
General fitness training can also be used to promote "toning" or "building" of muscles, which are essentially the same physiological process. (However, "toning" implies moderate muscle definition, whereas "building" implies increasing musculature significantly.
Physical fitness comprises two related concepts: general fitness (a state of health and well-being) and specific fitness (a task-oriented definition based on the ability to perform specific aspects of sports or occupations).
In previous years, fitness was commonly defined as the capacity to carry out the day’s activities without undue fatigue. However, as automation increased leisure time, changes in lifestyles following the industrial revolution rendered this definition insufficient. These days, physical fitness is considered a measure of the body’s ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, to be healthy, to resist hypokinetic diseases, and to meet emergency situations.
Daniel is ACSM Health & Fitness Instructor Certified and holds a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science. The main focus of Daniel’s work has centered on developing clients abilities in order to achieve the following goals – Body Fat Loss, Strength training and muscle growth, cardiovascular fitness training, improving health status (i.e. blood pressure, cholesterol), core conditioning and assisting clients training for marathons.
Flora trained at Premier International, gaining invaluable experience in gym instruction, personal training and sports massage therapy. She takes a keen interest in marathon running and swimming and has competed at an International level in eventing. Her main aim is to not only focus on her clients’ overall general health and fitness, but also on achieving their sports specific goals.
