What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a diverse discipline based on scientific foundations that is used to treat a wide range of conditions associated with the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

 

Practitioners’ use a physical approach to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social well-being, taking account of variations in health status.

 

Physiotherapy can benefit people of all ages affected by injury, illness or by a developmental or other disability. It is commonly used as a rehabilitative measure, as well as a means of improving movement and easing pain. Clients are often referred for physiotherapy by doctors or other health and social care professionals.

 

Treatment techniques used in clinic include:

 

  • Manual techniques such as massage, manipulation, joint mobilization and stretching
  • Therapeutic exercise prescription
  • Electrotherapy modalities such as ultrasound, interferential and TENS
  • Heat and cold therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Correction of posture, lifting and sporting techniques
  • Taping and the use of orthotics or splints
