Biomechanical Assessments/ Screening and Orthotics London SW15 - Print Version
Overview
Biomechanical problems and poor technique can lead to sprains, strains and back pain. Early assessment and intervention can prevent injuries and save you from a lot of time out of action.
Physiotherapy assessment for biomechanics can ensure that your lower limbs are aligned and have a good balance between strength and flexibility thus avoiding any adverse strain put on the lower back. Physio4Life has biomechanical assessment systems to assess you statically and dynamically so we can identify the root of your back pain or sporting injury.
Once we have identified if it is due to overpronating feet or poor lumbar stability for example we can then work to correct your biomechanics or stability to optimise your performance and relieve you of your pain. This is also very effective for prevention of injury and lower back pain and you will learn how to use your body in a way that is optimal for all your activities.
At Physio4Life we have a gait analysis lab with digital analysis equipment for biomechanical and dynamic assessments. Faults in your walking, running or sporting techniques can be picked up. This indicates the treatment you require whether it is podiatry orthotics, a gym and/or home programme or hands on treatment.
Gait Analysis
At Physio4Life we offer an in-house analysis of foot biomechanics and production of orthotics using the TOG Gaitscan® system, Dartfish and Quintec video analysis software.
One of the main areas where injury can be prevented is through having the correct foot mechanics. An example of this is where, due to the foot being part of the kinetic chain, pain occurs in the back due to poor foot biomechanics. Approximately 85% of the population has problems with their feet with only 15% having optimal function. This can be easily and painlessly checked out in only 45 minutes. This is done by:
- A full Musculoskeletal screening including muscle and joint functional tests.
- Standing stationary on the foot plate with both feet.
- Walking onto the foot plate each foot at a time.
- Jogging onto the foot plate each foot at a time.
- Videoing each process and analysing them with the Quintec system.
- The results are discussed with you.
- If orthotics are required the results are then emailed to TOG.
- Orthotics are made to your requirements and returned within 10 days.

Prescription orthotics are medical insoles that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. They work in a similar way that braces work on your teeth by gently exerting pressure on your feet to bring them back into proper alignment. They simply slip into your shoes and are made of a flexible moulded plastic.
Once your feet are working in the way they were designed it will help reduce muscle strain, prevent torsion and added stresses being put on the muscles, ligaments, knees, hips and lower back. Your body will not have to try and control the poor mechanics, and shock absorption will be improved.
